Today we explored a little bit area of Escalante river- hiked part of Escalante river trail and then completed 7 miles hike of Calf Creek Falls Trail. Named for its use as a natural pen for calves back in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, the creek turned into very popular hiking trail after the formation of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. This is not a trail for hikers looking for solitude- we met crowds of all kind – families, students, “boomers”, and a lot of dogs- we felt sorry for our Dixie who cannot do long hike any more. Walking between mineral-streaked colorful cliffs of Navajo Sandstone we really enjoyed people, good weather, amazing nature around us, pre-historic rock art sites en route to the stunning falls.
