Ice cave in Chamonix

This manmade ice cave is quite an attraction for tourists and had to be dug every year due to fast moving ( melting ) glacier. It could be reached by cogwheel train from the Chamonix or by hiking. First you have to take lift down and then walk system of steps which in the beginning made of concrete, then metals, and another set of steps has to be added every year because this longest Mer de Glace glacier melts rapidly. It was breaking my heart to see markers of ice level at different years- 1980, 1995, 2002 and so on. Ice which was filling valley up to the train station disappeared- hundreds of meters emptiness and metal steps by now 550 in total.
