Pont Alexandre III bridge
The Pont Alexandre III bridge is located in the center of Paris, crossing the Seine River between the 7th and 8th arrondissements (neighborhoods). The famous Champs-Elysées commercial district lies to the north of the bridge. This area is also home to the Grand Palais and the Petit Palais (Great Palace and Small Palace), both constructed during the same 1900 World Fair. The south side of the bridge is home to Les Invalides, a military museum which has a sprawling lawn and houses the tomb of Napoleon.
The Pont Alexandre III was commissioned in anticipation of the 1900 World Fair in Paris. The bridge was named in honor of the Russian Tsar Alexandre III. This diplomatic gesture was intended to celebrate the Russian-French alliance established in 1891. In 1896, the first stone was laid by Tsar Nicolas II, Alexandre’s son and successor. The gesture was reciprocated by the construction of the Trinity Bridge over the Neva River in Saint Petersburg.
