Cripple Creek Gold Mines, Colorado, 2018

Located at the base of Pikes Peak, the historic mining towns Cripple Creek and Victor are surrounded by majestic mountains and breathtaking scenic views. More than 100 years ago the boom of Colorado’s Gold Rush put these towns on the map. Especially at the Victor one could see leftovers of beauty and tumultuous past. It looks like more ghost town which desperately trying to get “blood running in its decayed body”. There are couple of restaurants-we had lunch in one- just to support local business; couple stores- one definitely worth to visit- Broom store with rows and rows of all kind of brooms; small, dusty museum where I did not miss a chance to try all kind of hats. Cripple Creek is more alive and touristy-(gold and gambling go hand in hand historically)- there are at least five casinos and nicely restored theater where we saw a play- The Plaids- was a pretty good one.
Gold mining is still present in area life- huge areas are covered with waste rocks which actively sprayed- I guess to keep dust down (maybe toxic dust?). One can also take a tour to the historic old mine- just to see and breathe in a history and maybe some mercury with that.
